SNP ANNOUNCE NEW DEPUTE LEADER

KEITH BROWN TO LEAD ENGAGEMENT OVER SCOTLAND’S FUTURE

The SNP has today announced Keith Brown as the new Depute Leader at their party their conference in Aberdeen.

Keith Brown won the contest with 55 per cent of the vote which was decided by a one vote per member single transferable vote. Mr Brown confirmed that he will chair the discussions on Scotland’s future at SNP National Assemblies and revealed plans to host roundtable meetings with civic Scotland, trade unions and business organisations.

Keith Brown said:

“It is a great honour to have been elected as the new Depute Leader of the SNP, and it will be a huge privilege to serve alongside Nicola Sturgeon our party leader.

“This is the party I joined more than three decades ago, the party I have campaigned for and the party I have been honoured to represent in local government, in Holyrood and as a Cabinet Secretary.

“Today, as I take on this new responsibility, our party is in good heart – and the polls show us in a commanding position at both Holyrood and Westminster, 11 years into office.

“While other parties bicker and fight we work hard to represent the people of Scotland and win their support.

“I am proud of what the SNP has achieved, but there is so much more we can do – to build a fairer, more inclusive Scotland, with our NHS and public services the very best they can be.

“We’ve made real progress in government despite years of Tory austerity and cuts imposed on Scotland’s budget.

“And while the Tories think they can do anything they want to Scotland and get away with it, we will continue to oppose them and instead promote our ambition for Scotland.

“We will continue to fight the chaotic job-destroying Brexit that threatens to make matters worse.

“With the publication of the Sustainable Growth Commission’s report we have opened a new debate on how Scotland can move beyond the damage and despair of Brexit.

“It’s conclusions are clear: small, independent nations can be successful – and we should, we must, be optimistic about that potential.

“In the coming months I’ll chair three National Assemblies to discuss the report’s findings. I’m looking forward to an exciting and invigorating debate, in the best traditions of our Party.

“And that debate is not just for the SNP – we have a responsibility to set out a credible plan for independence, to listen to others and take on their ideas.

“So I’ll will engage in a wider discussion too – inviting trade unions and business groups as well as people from across civic Scotland and the Yes family to share their views with us as we build that case.”
