SNP MSP for Maryhill and Springburn, Bob Doris, joined local Kirk Reverend Brian Casey at the Home Office in Glasgow today to back the campaign to save Bob’s constituent, 10 year old orphan Giorgi Kakava, from being deported by a UK Tory Government who have sought to create a hostile environment for migrants and asylum seekers.

Nearly 65,000 people have signed a petition which has been handed in to the Home Office this morning by Giorgi’s gran Ketino, supported by Bob Doris MSP and Reverend Casey. The Rev Casey’s petition called for Giorgi to be granted asylum in the UK. Giorgi’s mother Sopio died in Glasgow in February after fleeing to the city seven years ago – they left Georgia because his life was in danger over a debt owed by his father.
Giorgi came to Scotland seeking safety – yet the Tory government’s hostile migration policies threaten his right to live in the country which he calls home, instead risking being sent back to Georgia. The case was also raised at PMQs this afternoon.
Commenting, Giorgi’s local MSP Bob Doris said:
“This is another heart-breaking case of a young boy being threatened with deportation rather than treated with compassion.
“It is absolutely disgraceful that that Tories would even consider deporting a ten year old orphan who knows nothing other than living in Scotland – the fact that it has come to the point of the Kirk needing to petition the Home Office to try and keep young Giorgi in the country is absolutely sickening.
“As Reverend Casey has said, it was his mother’s ‘dying wish’ that he remained in Glasgow and grew up a Scottish boy.
“Young Giorgi needs certainty, safety and stability as soon as possible and that must surely mean his future should be safeguarded here in Scotland.
“The local community has rallied round to offer their support and I have written to the Home Secretary Sajid Javid MP urging compassion. It’s now time for the Home Office to do the right thing and support Giorgi, a vulnerable young asylum seeker who calls Springburn his home.”
