SNP MP Marion Fellows has called on the UK Government to ‘stand up for steel’ after the United States confirmed a  25% tariff on steel from the EU. President Trump has applied tariffs to stop Chinese steel from undercutting domestic manufacturers and after failing to negotiate a deal with the EU before the 1st of June deadline.

Around 7% of UK steel exports go to the US and plate steel, like that produced at Scotland’s Dalzell steelworks in Motherwell, is likely to be impacted.
Marion Fellows – the MP for Motherwell and Wishaw -  fears tariffs will risk jobs in Scotland and across the UK and has called on the Prime Minister to follow the Scottish Government’s lead and take action to protect and grow the sector in light of Trump’s tariffs.
Marion Fellows MP  said:
"The Prime Minister must stand up for steel and protect and grow the sector. President Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on steel imports from the EU will hurt the sector here in Scotland and across the UK.
"President Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on steel imports from the EU will hurt the sector here in Scotland and across the UK.  Although the tariffs are aimed at blocking highly subsidised Chinese steel  - it will adversely impact  on steel manufacturers here in Scotland.
"The SNP Scottish Government has already proven its commitment to steel after successfully securing Dalzell’s future , and now we need action from the UK Government to show that it cares about this vital industry."
