TORY GOVERNMENT “OVERPROMISED AND UNDER-DELIVERED” ON CITY REGION DEAL, MSP SAYS

Stirling MSP Bruce Crawford has criticised the UK Government for “overpromising and under-delivering” on investment in the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal.

The City Region Deal’s heads of terms were signed in Stirling today by Economy Secretary Keith Brown, the Scottish Secretary and the two local authority leaders – with £45.1 million Scottish Government investment committed over 10 years as well as an additional £5 million for projects in Callander and Kildean.

By contrast, the UK Government has committed only £40.1m over 15 years once the notional £5m valuation for the MOD’s disused Forthside land has been discounted. Tory Lord Duncan had promised that the UK Government would hand over surplus MoD land for nil value.

Commenting at First Minister’s Questions Nicola Sturgeon said that it is “disappointing that the UK government has committed to significantly less”, continuing, “in fact, if you look at the Scottish Government’s overall commitment to City Growth deals now, it stands at £1.3bn compared to just a billion from the UK Government. So we will continue to encourage the UK Government to do more, but we will not hold back in giving these cities and these regions the investment they deserve.”

SNP MSP for Stirling Bruce Crawford said:

“The Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal is a vote of confidence in the area that will help build communities and transform our regional economies going forward.

“However, I am disappointed that the Tory Government has overpromised and under-delivered on this deal - failing to match the SNP Scottish Government’s contribution by millions of pounds.

“The Westminster government can and must find the funds to match the SNP Government’s commitment to the City Region Deals. It is time for the Tories to stump up their fair share for Scotland.”

Bruce Crawford MSP’s question to the First Minister:

“Would the First Minister agree with me that it is great news that the Stirling/Clackmannanshire City Region Deal heads of terms were signed off this morning in Stirling.

“The total package of £95.2 includes an additional £5m from the Scottish Government for infrastructure projects at Callander and Kildean will contribute significantly to the economic success of the Region.

“But would she also agree that it is disappointing that the UK Government overpromised and under-delivered given that the Scottish Government will invest £50m in real cash over 10 years while the UK Government will invest only £40m over 15 years - once the notional £5m valuation for MOD Forthside is discounted.”

Excerpt from the First Minister’s response:

“...We were hoping to see a UK Government investment of £50 million pounds, that’s what we were expecting and indeed that’s what we were prepared to commit, that is what the Scottish Government have committed, so it is disappointing that the UK government has committed to significantly less than that. In fact if you look at the Scottish Government’s overall commitment to City Growth deals now, it stands at £1.3bn compared to just a billion from the UK Government. So we will continue to encourage the UK Government to do more, but we will not hold back in giving these cities and these regions the investment they deserve.”
