APPOINTING YET MORE LORDS ‘CYNICAL AND A COMPLETE FIX’

SNP MP Pete Wishart has said that the latest increase in the numbers of peers appointed to the House of Lords is 'cynical' and a 'complete fix'.

The comments came as Pete Wishart asked about the latest additions to the upper chamber at PMQs. The prime minister created a further 13 peers last week - taking the total to more than 800 Lords, following a number of defeats in the Lords on Brexit votes.

Pete Wishart MP asked:

''As the nation’s attention was on the Royal Wedding, the Prime Minister was busy stuffing the House of Lords with 13 new members - apparently we need more of the 'right' type of legislator.

''How many more is she going to appoint and when will enough be enough?"

Pete Wishart commented following PMQs:

"Creating more peers is cynical even for this Tory government and it is a real affront to democracy. The Tories are not even trying to disguise this - it is a complete fix.

"There will now be over 800 – making it substantially larger than the House of Commons. Every time the Tories face choppy waters over losing votes, they just stuff the place with more peers.

‘’It is ludicrous that we have yet more Lords - and it is no surprise that there is growing anger about the role and power of these unelected cronies.’’
