Support for remaining in the EU has surged amongst voters in Northern Ireland – exposing the growing crisis at the heart of the UK government’s approach to Brexit.

The survey found that 69% of voters in Northern Ireland would vote Remain if there was another referendum, compared to the 56% who voted Remain in 2016.
The survey, by researchers from Queen’s University Belfast, also found a majority in support of remaining in the single market and customs union after Brexit.
The huge swing means that in two of the four home nations two-thirds of voters oppose Brexit – at the same time as the UK government uses EU withdrawal as a smokescreen for a power grab on devolved matters.
Commenting, SNP MSP Joan McAlpine said:
“This huge swing against leaving the EU underlines just how much of a mess the Tories are making of Brexit.
“The Tories took a narrow vote across the whole of the UK – with both Scotland and Northern Ireland voting to Remain – as a mandate not just for Brexit, but for the hardest of hard Brexits.
“But Theresa May can’t even unite her Cabinet around a Brexit plan, never mind uniting the four nations of the UK.
“Almost two years on from the vote, we’re still none the wiser about our trading and customs arrangements with Europe – which are absolutely essential to jobs and prosperity.”
