SCOTLAND SECOND BEST IN EUROPE FOR LGBTI RIGHTS

The latest Rainbow Europe country ranking has named Scotland as the second best country in Europe for LGBTI+ rights – ahead of the rest of the UK in the criteria used to determine what each country is doing to promote and protect the rights of LGBTI+ citizens.

The rankings are based on a number of different factors, including equality and non-discrimination, family issues, hate crimes and hate speech, legal gender recognition, civil society and asylum rights. Using these measurements, ILGA Europe, who carried out the survey, confirmed that Scotland would rank second in Europe, behind only Malta, with a score of 82% - ahead of the overall UK score of 73%.

The Scottish Government has consistently supported and promoted the rights of the LGBTI+ community in Scotland – through important action such as delivering equal marriage, tackling hate crime and working to improve LGBTI inclusive education. A Scottish Government bill pardoning gay men convicted under historical discriminatory laws is currently making its way through parliament.

Commenting, SNP MSP and convener of Holyrood’s Equalities Committee, Christina McKelvie, said:

“These rankings shows the excellent progress Scotland is making in promoting LGBTI+ rights.

“Over the last decade, the Scottish Government has worked hard to support the LGBTI+ community in Scotland – delivering equal marriage, tackling hate crime and promoting inclusive education. It is clear that this hard work is paying off – and we’re also in the process of delivering a pardon for those convicted under discriminatory laws no longer on the statute book.

“These rankings cover a wide range of issues facing LGBTI+ communities across Europe – from equality and non-discrimination to hate crimes, hate speech and legal gender recognition.

“It’s welcome that Scotland is able to perform so strongly across all these categories – but there is of course plenty more to do to achieve true equality here in Scotland and across the continent, and the SNP will continue to do all we can to tackle discrimination and promote equal rights in our society and throughout Europe.”
