HIGH-SKILLED STAFF BLOCKED FROM UK BY "SELF-DEFEATING" HOME OFFICE

UK Government immigration policies are blocking high skilled staff from entering the country after securing jobs warns local MP, Brendan O’Hara.

Recent figures published by the Home Office have revealed that over 1,600 IT specialists and engineers who had secured jobs in the UK were denied visas between December and March.

Industry experts have warned that monthly limits on the number of entrants allowed under Theresa May’s Tier 2 visa system is turning away skilled workers from outside the European Union, who would play a vital role in UK industry and help develop the economy.

Brendan O’Hara said:

“The current immigration policy of the UK Government is failing Scotland, our economy and everyone in it.”

“Even school teachers in Argyll and Bute are being turned down from vacancies which have been unfilled for months.”

“Rather than attempting to mitigate the effects of a devastating Brexit on valued and skilled EU workers, the Tory Government is instead targeting and rejecting the very professionals from the rest of the world that we need so desperately.”

“Scotland is more dependent on immigration than the rest of the UK for future prosperity and success. This is why – between cases like this and the Windrush scandal – the case for full devolution of immigration powers to Scotland is stronger than ever.”

Matthew Percival, the CBI's UK policy director, told the BBC: “At a time when government is seeking to promote 'global Britain', deliberately restricting access to skilled workers from around the world is self-defeating.”
