The SNP has condemned the killing by Israeli forces of at least 59 protestors in Gaza, and has called on the UK government to back the UN’s calls for an independent and impartial investigation into the violence, and for an immediate end to the disproportionate use of force against demonstrators.

Responding to an Urgent Question in Westminster today, the SNP’s Westminster Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Stephen Gethins MP, said:

“The killing of demonstrators – including children – by Israeli forces is appalling and harrowing to see. This is a long and protracted conflict which is not helped by the reckless and irresponsible embassy move by the United States.

That is why it is vital that the UK government backs the UN's calls for an immediate end to the disproportionate use of force against Palestinian demonstrators, an impartial and independent investigation, and ensuring that Palestinians enjoy full rights under the human rights convention.

“The events in Gaza yesterday must be met with meaningful and responsible action from the UK government, and not just rhetoric.”
