South Scotland Tory MSP Brian Whittle described Scottish Government investment in upgrading the main trunk road to the north
of Scotland as “an expensive vanity project”.

The blundering remark came in the course of a Holyrood debate this afternoon on the condition of Scotland’s roads.

Dualling the full 80 miles of the A9 and creating Scotland’s first fully electric-enabled highway will deliver huge economic
growth to the north of Scotland, improved road safety and quicker journey times while also delivering upon the SNP’s
climate change ambitions.

Commenting, Highland MSP Kate Forbes – who immediately pulled Mr Whittle up on his remarks during the course of the debate –

“Dualling and upgrading the A9 will truly transform the Highlands – improving journey times, safety and giving a huge economic
boost to businesses.

“An electric-enabled highway from the central belt to Inverness shows that the rural Scotland is at the very heart of our
ambition to make Scotland fit for the future.

“£3 billion investment in the A9 which will make a vast difference to the day to day lives of my constituents and truly help
the north of Scotland to prosper.

“To simply write it off as a ‘vanity project’ is more than a little bit insulting.

“The Tories need to be unequivocal – do they back infrastructure investment in Highland Scotland to ensure our road network is
fit for the future? Or are they going to do what countless governments did before the SNP and ignore
communities and businesses who depend on reliable infrastructure in rural Scotland?”
