The SNP has opposed the Tories’ plans for government, warning that the reckless agenda shows contempt for Scotland, fails to tackle austerity, imposes restrictive immigration measures, does not protect the NHS, fails to improve workers’ rights, and disregards the devolved governments.

Following a vote in the House of Commons on the government’s Queen's Speech, the SNP’s Westminster leader reiterated that the people of Scotland must have the choice of a better future than the broken, Brexit Britain being imposed upon Scotland against its will.

The party also tabled its own amendment to today's Queen's Speech vote rejecting the government's proposals for this Parliament.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“The Tories’ reckless legislative programme shows nothing but contempt for Scotland and will be devastating for the UK’s economy, our vital public services, for workers’ rights and freedom of movement.

“The UK government’s plans to impose restrictive immigration measures, turn a blind eye to a decade of Tory austerity, its lack of action to expand parental rights, and its continued waste of billions of pounds on nuclear weapons, will drag Scotland and the UK down the road to economic and social ruin.

“In stark contrast, the SNP brought forward an Alternative Queen’s Speech which set out an ambitious twelve point plan to strengthen the economy, protect our vital public services, tackle damaging Tory austerity, and respect Scotland’s democratic right to choose its own future.

“Far from being a union of equals, the Tory government's complete disregard for the devolved administrations has only highlighted that Westminster is not working for Scotland but against it.

“The people of Scotland must have the choice over a better future as an independent country, rather than the broken, Brexit Britain being imposed upon us against our will – and that decision lies solely with the people of Scotland.”
