The SNP’s Westminster leader has warned that Boris Johnson is “blindly hurtling towards the cliff-edge” with his devastating Brexit bill, as the prospect of a No-Deal Brexit grows.

Ahead of the Withdrawal Agreement coming before Parliament today (Friday), the SNP has tabled a Reasoned Amendment to the bill that calls on the UK government to recognise Scotland’s overwhelming vote to remain in the EU, and to ensure that it does not leave the EU without the consent of the Scottish Parliament.

The Tory government is seeking to add a new clause to the Brexit Bill to make it illegal for Parliament to extend the transition period beyond the end of next year - ramping up the risk of a No-Deal crash-out from the EU.

The EU's chief negotiator earlier revealed that trade talks will not be concluded in time and that the 11-month timetable is “unrealistic.” A leaked UK government document also highlighted that the Tory leader faces “a major strategic, political and operational challenge” to delivering his Brexit plans by Dec 2020.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“With a majority Tory government in Westminster, Boris Johnson is now blindly hurtling towards the cliff-edge with his devastating Brexit plans that will leave us all poorer and worse off.

“SNP MPs will not vote for this flawed and deeply damaging legislation – which analysis has shown will hit the economy, cost thousands of jobs in Scotland, sell out our fishing and agriculture sector, and harm people’s livelihoods.

“As the Withdrawal Agreement comes before Parliament, the SNP has tabled a Reasoned Amendment that rejects the Tories’ toxic Brexit bill, and which states that the UK government cannot drag Scotland out of the EU before gaining the legislative consent of the Scottish Parliament.

“Scotland voted to remain in the EU, and in last week's general election Scotland voted decisively to escape Brexit and to put Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands – our voice and democratic vote must be respected.

“The Tory leader has no mandate to drag Scotland out of the EU and he must instead recognise Scotland's democratic right to choose a better future. Scotland's First Minister has written to Boris Johnson detailing the democratic case for the transfer of power from Westminster to the Scottish Parliament to allow for an independence referendum that is beyond legal challenge.

“Throughout this entire process Scotland’s interests have been ignored and it’s clearer than ever that the people of Scotland must have a say over their future, rather than having a broken Brexit Britain being imposed upon us.”

Boris Johnson will amend bill to outlaw extension:

Reasoned amendment:

Delete everything from, “House” and insert,

“declines to give the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill a second reading because 62 per cent of voters in Scotland supported remaining in the European Union in the 2016 European Union referendum, 74 per cent of the voters in Scotland supported political parties that proposed either remaining in the European Union or, a second referendum on European Union membership, in the 2019 General Election and agrees that the United Kingdom must not leave the European Union before gaining the legislative consent of the Scottish Parliament.
