TORIES BACKTRACK ON PROMISE TO PROTECT WORKER’S RIGHTS & ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS

The SNP has slammed the Tory government for backtracking on promises to enshrine workers’ rights and environmental safeguards in law ahead of Brexit - warning that not doing so could see them decimated.

Boris Johnson plans to reintroduce the withdrawal agreement bill - which if passed would implement his deal - this week.

However, No 10 have refused to confirm that the provisions included in the original draft of the bill and the guarantees made by Boris Johnson in October - to ensure that workers’ rights and environmental standards are not weakened after Brexit – will still stand when the bill is brought back on Friday.

This also follows the Tory manifesto pledge to “legislate to ensure high standards of workers’ rights.”

Commenting, Chris Stephens said:

“It is disgraceful but no surprise that the Tories have backtracked on their promise to protect workers' rights and environmental standards after Brexit – new MPs haven’t even been sworn in yet and the Tories have already started throwing their pre-election promises out the window.

“Before the election, Johnson pledged to maintain a level playing field with our EU partners on workers’ rights and environmental protections – this is further proof that his promises are not worth the paper they are written on.

“We already know leaving the EU without a deal would be catastrophic for Scotland and the UK, and to remove that safety net by failing to enshrine workers’ rights and environmental safeguards into law would deliver a body blow to Scotland and the rest of the UK.

“Scotland’s interests have been ignored throughout this entire Brexit process and Johnson's plans single out Scotland for a raw deal. Now he looks set to strip away hard-won protections that would consign workers across Scotland to further hardship.

“SNP MPs will oppose Boris Johnson’s reckless Brexit plans every step of the way, however it‘s clear that the Tories are actively acting against Scotland’s interests.

“The people of Scotland must have the choice over a better future than the broken Westminster system being imposed upon us.”
