NEW HOME SECRETARY MUST DITCH THERESA MAY’S TOXIC TORY IMMIGRATION POLICIES

CALL FOR ROOT AND BRANCH REVIEW AND DEVOLUTION OF POWERS

The SNP has said new Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, must ditch Theresa May’s toxic immigration policies – warning a change of personnel at the Home Office is not enough.

Joanna Cherry QC MP, SNP Justice and Home Affairs spokesperson, said it was right that Amber Rudd resigned but the blame for the Windrush scandal lies firmly at the door of the Prime Minister, and the Tory government’s hostile immigration policies.

The MP for Edinburgh South West is calling for a root and branch review of UK immigration policy, the scrapping of arbitrary net migration targets, an immediate end to the hostile environment approach, and for the Tories and Labour to ditch their toxic anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies in favour of a sensible, evidence-based policy that recognises the huge benefits of immigration to the economy and society.

Warning that UK government immigration policy is failing Scotland, the SNP are also calling for immigration powers to be devolved to the Scottish Parliament to create a system that works for Scotland’s economy.

Commenting, Joanna Cherry QC MP said:

“I welcome Sajid Javid to his role but the UK Home Office needs much more than a change of personnel.

“The blame for the Windrush scandal lies firmly at the door of Theresa May and her toxic Tory immigration policies. The Home Secretary must immediately undertake a root and branch review of UK immigration policy, scrap the UK government’s damaging arbitrary net migration targets, and end its inhumane hostile environment approach.

“The SNP has consistently called on the Tories and Labour to ditch their toxic anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies, and instead back a sensible, evidence-based immigration policy that recognises the huge benefits to our economy and society.

“UK government immigration policy is failing Scotland. In addition to UK-wide reforms it is vital that immigration powers are devolved to the Scottish Parliament so that we can create a fair system that works for Scotland and the specific needs of our economy.”
