The SNP has criticised the Home Secretary for presiding over a “litany of callous incompetence”, and called on her to do the right thing and resign, following the revelation that the Home Office had set internal deportation targets – just a day after Amber Rudd stated that the department “don’t have targets for removals.”

During an Urgent Question raised in Westminster today, SNP MP Alison Thewliss set out questions that Amber Rudd must now answer without delay over the Home Office deportation targets -

· When were the targets for removals introduced?
· Who signed the policy off?
· How were they monitored?
· Were any of the local targets in place in Scotland?
· What happened to Home Office case officers who failed to meet the targets?
· If it’s true that posters were displayed to remind staff of targets, how is it possible that the Home Secretary wasn’t fully aware of the policy?

Commenting, Alison Thewliss MP said:

“The revelation that Home Office deportation targets exist comes as no real surprise to me or to hundreds of constituents that have come to my office over the past few years.

“There is a litany of callous incompetence in the Home Office department, and it is a problem of deliberate policy – cruel, hostile environment policy created by the former Home Secretary, now Prime Minister - and continued unabated by the current Home Secretary.

“Amber Rudd must offer clear answers over when the Home Office targets were introduced? Who signed off on the policy? Were any of the local targets in place in Scotland?

“This Home Secretary is presiding over a department that is out of control, marked by cruelty and chaos – the Home Secretary must come clean over this shameful scandal, stop shielding the Prime Minister, and do the right thing and resign.”
