BORIS JOHNSON CAN'T BE TRUSTED TO OBEY THE LAW ON BREXIT EXTENSION

CHERRY: TORY LEADER IS DANGEROUS AND MUST BE REMOVED FROM POWER

Joanna Cherry QC MP has said Boris Johnson can't be trusted to obey the law - as a hearing continues in Scotland's Court of Session to ensure the law requiring an extension is upheld.

The SNP Justice spokesperson said the Tory leader was "dangerous, untrustworthy and must be removed from office" - as Downing Street sources said they would avoid an extension, despite the UK government submission to the Court confirming “he will send a letter” requesting one.

Under the cross-party Benn Act, the UK government must ask for a further extension to Article 50 from the EU by 19th October, unless the House of Commons has approved a deal with the EU or expressly voted for a no deal exit.

Commenting, Joanna Cherry QC MP said:

"Boris Johnson simply cannot be trusted to obey the law. The Tory leader has shown time and again that he is dangerous, untrustworthy - and must be removed from office.

”We will continue to press this case to secure a formal binding undertaking to the court that a Brexit extension will be sought - and to ensure that the law is respected in letter and spirit.

"The fact that Downing Street are still briefing they will find a way to avoid an extension, despite Parliament passing a law requiring one, shows how important it is to take every step necessary.

"The Tory government's plans for an extreme Brexit would be devastating for Scotland and the UK - threatening to cause a recession, destroy 100,000 Scottish jobs, and cause lasting harm to living standards, public services and the economy.

"Whatever happens now, it is clear the opposition parties must unite to bring this Tory government down, secure an extension, prevent a no-deal and hold an election. The SNP will put Scotland's opposition to Brexit and our right to choose our own future as an independent country at the heart of that election.”

Re-elect Brendan O'Hara for Argyll & Bute on December 12th

In this General Election, we have the perfect opportunity to start shaping a new future for Scotland as an independent nation, within the European Union.

Like every other part of Scotland, Argyll & Bute voted overwhelmingly to remain in the European Union and that is a message I have delivered time and again to the Tories in Westminster. Yet despite the economic disaster that leaving the EU will mean for Argyll & Bute, Boris Johnson’s Tories are still determined to drag us out of Europe against our will.

An SNP victory here will tell Mr. Johnson that we reject his Tory hard-Brexit plan and that we are taking control of our own future.

Only with your financial help, however, can we ensure that every person behind every door in every town, in every village and on every island across this vast constituency gets to hear that positive SNP message of a new future for Scotland.

So please, give what you can. Any donation however small or large will make a real difference and help us secure a decisive win in Argyll & Bute and return Brendan to Westminster, to continue fighting for the people of Argyll & Bute and start building that new Scotland.

Thank you
