The SNP has said the Prime Minister has serious questions to answer over reports the UK government refused to assist a French investigation into suspected money laundering and tax fraud by telecoms giant Lycamobile – citing the fact the company is the “biggest corporate donor to the Conservative party.”

French prosecutors launched a major probe into the firm and arrested 19 people accused of using its accounts to launder money from organised criminal networks two years ago. However Buzzfeed reported that the Conservative Party continued taking Lycamobile’s money – and it has now been revealed that UK authorities stonewalled a formal request from French prosecutors to carry out raids in London.

David Linden MP submitted an Urgent Question on the issue in Parliament this morning, however it was not accepted.

The reports follow the revelation that the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, is under investigation by parliament’s commissioner for receiving a “bulk discount” on seven flats bought from a Conservative donor. The Health Secretary has admitted he breached money laundering rules.

Commenting David Linden MP said:

“Theresa May has serious questions to answer over the Tory Party’s reported failure to assist in criminal proceedings against Lycamobile – the Tories’ biggest corporate donor.

“The Prime Minister vowed to “act vigorously” against those suspected of money laundering, yet it has been reported the government has taken no criminal action against the company.

“And it follows revelations the Health Secretary has breached money laundering rules after receiving a bulk discount on flats from a Tory donor.

“The SNP has called on the UK government on numerous occasions to take much tougher action on tax avoidance and money laundering - but as these reports show the Tories can’t be trusted to clean up their own party.”
