‘ANOTHER TORY BETRAYAL’ ON SHIPBUILDING

INTERNATIONAL TENDERS FOR NEW SUPPORT VESSELS' QUITE ASTOUNDING’

SNP Defence procurement spokesperson Douglas Chapman MP has said the announcement that the UK government is putting out Ministry of Defence navy orders to international tender is ‘quite astounding' and is yet another Tory betrayal of shipyards in Scotland.

The comments come as it has been confirmed that contracts to build three Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships will be put out to yards in Germany, Italy and South Korea - amongst others  - who would bid for the work, meaning that yards in Scotland could lose out on vital defence orders.

The MoD policy is that only orders for war combat ships such as the Type 26 frigates go to UK yards. The MoD has now said that the bids for three support vessels to service the aircraft carriers will go out to full international tender this month, which has caused outrage amongst workforces and unions.

Douglas Chapman MP commented :

"The Tories think they can do anything to Scotland and get away with it - this is yet another Tory betrayal of shipyards. It is quite astounding that the MoD are even contemplating this – as we have been told time after time that overseas yards are not suitable for naval orders.

"I have been telling the MoD and government ministers that orders for these support ships should be kept here, where yards in Scotland can be substantial beneficiaries for jobs, skills and investment.

"This Tory government has simply stopped listening, and is ignoring the value for the tax payer by having these ships built at the likes of Rosyth instead of yards in other parts of the world. We're looking at around 6,000 dock yard jobs and a further 5,000 in the wider supply chain – and this against all the hollow promises and commitments made for years to keep work for MoD orders in the UK.

"I'm not surprised that unions like the GMB are absolutely furious at this decision. If there is anyone left who trusts a word the Tories  tell us on shipbuilding this must be a wake up call . They simply cannot and must not be trusted.’’
