New analysis has found that every Brexit option would leave the UK worse off – with Theresa May’s preferred ‘bespoke’ deal costing the taxpayer £615 million a week.

The analysis, which was conducted by Professor Jonathan Portes for the thinktank Global Future, confirms that Brexit will come at a cost to public services.

The cost of the UK government’s proposed bespoke deal is equivalent to additional borrowing of £40 billion a year by 2033-34 – equivalent to around three times the current annual health service budget for Scotland, while a “no-deal” WTO outcome would result in costs equivalent to around six times NHS Scotland’s yearly spending.

22% of the NHS budget, while a “no-deal” WTO outcome would result in costs equivalent to 44% of the health budget.

This research backs the findings of the Scottish Government’s analysis about the impact of Brexit on our economy and underlines the case for remaining in the single market.

Commenting, SNP MSP Stuart McMillan said:

“This is just the latest analysis that confirms that Brexit is going to inflict major harm on our economy – and could seriously impact our ability to fund public services like the NHS.

“We were promised a Brexit dividend – but all we’re getting is a bill for the taxpayer. And far from delivering extra cash for the NHS, as was infamously promised by the leave campaign bus, this study shows that every scenario will end up taking money away from health and other vital public services.

“Staying in the single market and customs union is the best option for the jobs, investment and the economy.

“The fact that both the Tories and Labour want to sacrifice jobs and household incomes for a hard Brexit underlines the case for Scotland to take these decisions ourselves.”
