POLL: SCOTLAND’S FUTURE SHOULD LIE IN SCOTLAND’S HANDS

MAJORITY BELIEVE WESTMINSTER SHOULD NOT BLOCK REFERENDUM

A majority of people across the UK believe that a Westminster government should allow the Scottish Government to hold an independence referendum - according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by Opinium, revealed that a majority of those with a view (41%) agree the UK government should not veto the right of the Scottish Government to hold a second referendum in the next 5 years. In Scotland, that number rises to 46%.

Only a third (32%) feel the UK government should block the democratic right of the Scottish Government to hold a referendum on Scotland’s future.

The SNP has consistently called for all decisions about Scotland to be made in Scotland, as the threat of a no-deal Brexit and a Prime Minister that would deny more powers for Scotland grows.

Earlier this week, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell outlined that the UK Labour leadership would leave the choice over whether there should be an independence referendum to the Scottish people, adding: "We would not block something like that. We would let the Scottish people decide. That's democracy.”

SNP Depute Leader Keith Brown said:

“People across the UK overwhelmingly believe that independence should be a matter for the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish people - not Westminster.

“UK voters believe it should be up to people of Scotland to decide how they are governed – not a Tory party which has no mandate in Scotland, putting our economy at risk to suit their own political ends.

“This poll shows that Labour and the Tories’ undemocratic stance of denying Scotland the right to choose their future is completely untenable.

“Faced with chaos and uncertainty in Westminster, it's no wonder that support for independence in Scotland is growing.

“And support for independence will continue to rise, in the face of a shambolic Brexit and an incompetent Prime Minister.

"The Tories can see that – which is what lies behind their utterly undemocratic move to block the people of Scotland having a say on their future."

Q: If the the Scottish government requested that they hold a second referendum on Scottish independence in the next 5 years, do you think the UK Government should accept or refuse that request?

If requested, the UK Government should allow the Scottish Government to have a second referendum in the next 5 years - 41%

The UK Government should prevent the Scottish Government from holding a second referendum in the next 5 years - 32%

None of the these - 5%

Don’t know / not sure - 22%
