Shetland’s young voters could decide the result of the by-election on August 29, according to Tom Wills.

The SNP candidate is appealing to all 16- and 17-year-olds to make sure they are registered to vote before this Tuesday’s deadline - and to make their voice is heard at the ballot box.

His appeal comes as the SNP campaign prepares to step up a gear this weekend, targeting households all across Shetland.

Mr Wills said:

“The SNP government is proud to have given young people the vote in Scottish elections and to be leading the world in tackling climate change.

“Taking my campaign across Shetland, I’ve been inspired by the passion and enthusiasm of young voters ready to change politics for the better.

“16 & 17 year olds hold the key to this by-election result and it’s plain that young people in Shetland don’t want Brexit. It’s time to send Boris Johnson a message that we won’t let him cut us off from Europe.”

Mr Wills is to be joined this weekend by members of the SNP’s youth wing. Young Scots for Independence Vice-National Convener, Cllr Jordan Linden said:

“For 16- and 17-year-olds this will be their first opportunity to vote. Whether here in Shetland or on the mainland, young people need to make their voices heard.

“Our future prosperity has been put in danger by this Tory Brexit - Scotland’s future belongs in Europe. Let’s make that loud and clear on August 29.”

Shetland SNP branch Convener, Iain Malcolmson, added:

“Tom Wills is the standout candidate of the by-election. This week Tom published a bold plan to cut travel costs and he has now spoken with hundreds of voters on the Shetland Mainland and in Papa Stour, Whalsay, Fair Isle, Fetlar, Unst and Yell.

“We’ve had a real glimpse of what a great MSP for Shetland he would be. After 70 years of the Liberals here, Tom is asking for just 18 months until the next Scottish election to show people what he can do.

“Tom’s ideas are really striking a chord with islanders. That’s why more and more people are telling us that they are moving to the SNP, many for the first time.”
