MERRY FAMILY GRANTED REPRIEVE AFTER SNP ACTION

SNP MSP Fulton MacGregor has welcomed reports that the Merry family have been granted a reprieve by the Home Office after a Scottish Government intervention.

Volha Merry, known as Olya, was told by the Home Office that she had to leave the country and return to Belarus within 7 days – splitting her Scottish-born daughter from her father.

The family were concerned that their daughter would be forced to give up UK citizenship if she moved to Belarus.

Ms Merry has now been given a temporary reprieve, with no immediate threat of deportation while she prepares her case, which has been raised by local SNP MSP Fulton MacGregor and by External Affairs Secretary Fiona Hyslop, who yesterday wrote to Home Secretary Amber Rudd about the case.

Mr MacGregor welcomed the news and called on the Home Office to end plans to split up the family.

He commented:

“I’m delighted that, following the intervention of the Scottish Government, the Merry family have been handed a lifeline.

“It’s now time for the Home Office to end this ridiculous situation and stop trying to rip a young family apart. I will keep up the pressure on the UK government to do the right thing and to give Olya the right to stay.

“The heavy-handed approach by the UK government could see a young child, born in Scotland to a Scottish father, forced out of the country at the whims of immigration officials – that would be completely unacceptable.

“This case once again highlights the urgent need for Scotland to make decisions over immigration ourselves.”
