EU COMMISSION PRESIDENT NOMINEE: “THE DOOR IS OPEN BECAUSE WE WANT YOU IN”

VON DER LEYEN: “I’M A BIG FAN ON NICOLA STURGEON”

In a hearing in the European Parliament in Brussels today, EU Commission President nominee Ursula von der Leyen made her strongest comment yet on the need for more time to stop Brexit.

She also acknowledged Scotland’s strongly pro-EU stance and declared herself a “big fan” of Nicola Sturgeon.

Responding to SNP MEP Alyn Smith in the Green/EFA group hearing prior to the vote of the European Parliament next week on her nomination, Mrs von Der Leyen  agreed that the best Brexit is no Brexit, and that “the door is open because we want you in” — acknowledging the UK’s option to revoke Article 50.

Commenting, Alyn Smith said:

“This is an extremely important development.

“While the process of this appointment has certainly had its faults, Mrs von Der Leyen is showing herself to be exactly in line with Scotland in our efforts to stop Brexit.

“Her comments in support of Nicola Sturgeon demonstrate a clear understanding of the challenges Scotland faces in being dragged out of the EU against our democratic wishes. And her sympathy for our clear desire to remain in Europe is evident.

“The three SNP MEPs Scotland elected to the European Parliament were sent here to stop Brexit. We’ll do everything we can to achieve that.

“Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed she’s an ally in this cause — and she has done her candidacy a lot of good with her clear comments today.”
