NEXT TORY PRIME MINISTER WARNED AGAINST OUTSOURCING UK’S DIPLOMATIC SERVICE

BORIS JOHNSON UNDER FIRE FOR FAILING TO STAND UP FOR UK'S DIPLOMATS

The SNP's Foreign Affairs spokesperson has warned that the UK’s diplomatic service must not be “outsourced to the whims of the Trump administration” following the resignation of the UK’s ambassador to US, Sir Kim Darroch.

It has been reported that the ambassador made his decision to step down after witnessing Boris Johnson’s repeated refusal to stand by the UK’s Civil Service and its diplomats in the wake of Donald Trump's tweets condemning Sir Kim Darroch over his frank assessment that the US President was seen as “incompetent”, “inept” and “insecure”.

Stephen Gethins added that regardless of whoever becomes Prime Minister later this month, they must not kowtow to the Trump administration.

Commenting, Stephen Gethins MP said:

"The resignation of Sir Kim Darroch is deeply concerning and a worrying sign of where the UK’s role on the international stage is heading. The integrity and impartiality of the civil service must not be compromised.

“The reports that the Ambassador made his decision to step down after witnessing Boris Johnson’s refusal to support him is a damning indictment of how unfit Boris Johnson is to hold high office, and highlights his gross irresponsibility.

“It would be unacceptable if the UK’s diplomatic service and appointments were outsourced to the whims of the Trump administration.

“Rather than pandering to the erratic tweets from Donald Trump, the UK should be holding its international allies to account and standing by its diplomats who play a pivotal role in providing frank and important analysis.

“Regardless of whoever occupies Downing Street later this month, the next Prime Minister must not kowtow to the Trump administration or be dictated to on its key diplomatic appointments.”
