SNP MAKE LAST-DITCH PLEA TO HALT “IMMORAL” LOCK-CHANGES

SEVERE CONCERNS AS FIRST EVICTIONS TO TAKE PLACE THIS WEEK

The SNP is leading last-ditch demands for the Home Office to instruct private housing provider Serco to halt the “immoral and inhumane” lock-changing evictions of asylum seekers in Glasgow.

The calls come as a number of front-line housing organisations joined together to urge Serco to halt the evictions – just days before the private housing provider is due to change the locks on the first houses in Glasgow.

Last month Serco announced it would restart its lock-changing programme, which could leave hundreds of asylum seekers homeless and destitute.

However, a number of interim interdict orders preventing the evictions of individuals already served with notices by Serco have been obtained over the past week, with more to be heard.

Housing charity Shelter Scotland have said that “they are convinced that lock-change evictions due to be carried out by Serco are illegal and should not be going ahead.”

SNP MSP Sandra White said:

“These planned lock-changing evictions are wholly unacceptable, widely condemned by front-line charities and could force a number of already vulnerable people into homelessness and destitution.

"Every person has the human right to housing. This means having access to a safe and habitable place to live, not being subjected to lock-changes and forced evictions.

“The deadline for these evictions is looming, but the silence from the Home Office on this matter has been absolutely deafening. The UK Government must live up to its responsibilities and step in – instead of letting an asylum accommodation provider deal with the inevitable results of an utterly flawed system.

“This completely immoral and inhumane lock-change and eviction programme must be stopped, with immediate effect.”
