The SNP’s Europe spokesperson has said that Jeremy Corbyn’s glacial progress in outlining Labour’s latest Brexit stance raises more questions than it answers, warning that it intentionally fails to clarify whether Labour would continue to be pro-Brexit or switch to remain in the event of a snap general election.

The Labour leader today announced that the party would support a referendum on a Tory Brexit deal or on a no deal Brexit, with the option to remain. However it leaves open the door for Labour to support its own version of a Brexit deal in a general election.

The SNP has consistently called for a second EU referendum under any circumstance - with the option to remain - to end the Brexit impasse.

Commenting, Stephen Gethins MP said:

“Labour’s position on Brexit has been shifting at glacial pace – but today’s announcement raises more questions than it answers.

“While the move to back a referendum and take a remain position is a positive step in preventing a Tory Brexit or a catastrophic no-deal exit, Jeremy Corbyn has left open the door to switching back to being pro-Brexit in the event of a snap general election.

“People can see through that – and Jeremy Corbyn's Brexit con-trick of facing both ways at the same time simply will not wash with people any more. He must now clarify what Labour’s position would be in the event of a general election.

“With just over 100 days to go before the October Brexit deadline, the SNP will continue to work across party lines to prevent Scotland and the UK paying the economic price of Brexit. It’s clear that there is no such thing as a good Brexit and that any form of Brexit will be devastating for Scotland – destroying up to 100,000 jobs and costing every person up to £2,300 a year."
