Labour councillors in Falkirk today voted alongside the Tories to oust the SNP administration, meaning a likely return to a Tory/Labour coalition leading the Council.

Richard Leonard now faces calls to suspend the Falkirk Council Labour group who it is understood are now seeking to secure a power sharing arrangement with the Tories, despite the SNP winning the local elections in Falkirk in 2017.
Following that vote, then Labour leader Kezia Dugdale forbade Labour council groups from putting the Tories into power. Labour in Aberdeen defied party bosses and were suspended. Richard Leonard has failed to show leadership by ejecting the rogue councillors, despite their support for a Tory budget in the city and drastic cuts to local services. Yesterday the suspended Aberdeen councillors sent a submission to Labour’s executive committee begging to be readmitted to the party.
The SNP Leader of Falkirk Council Cecil Meiklejohn wrote to Richard Leonard last week, asking him to intervene to stop his councillors from backing a local Tory power grab. She has reiterated calls for Labour to follow the precedent set in Aberdeen and suspend the Falkirk Labour group in light of today’s vote.
Commenting, Cllr Cecil Meiklejohn said:
“The people of Falkirk voted for the SNP to lead their Council - they put their trust in us to deliver better local services for them and their communities.
“But Labour and the Tories have arrogantly deigned that they know better.
“Today’s vote completely undermines the democratic choice of the people of Falkirk and is a shameless and self-serving move to seize control of the council.
“In Labour’s case it’s completely inexcusable. They cannot be taken seriously as a party on the left when they’re happy to hop into bed with the austerity-obsessed Tories at the first sniff of power.
“The only reasonable response from Richard Leonard should be to suspend his council group in Falkirk from the Labour party with immediate effect, following the precedent set in Aberdeen.
“Anything less sends a troubling message that Labour councillors are free to back Tory austerity with impunity.”
