The SNP has condemned the thirteen Scottish Tory MPs for voting to keep the threat of a catastrophic no-deal Brexit on the table and pushing Scotland further towards the cliff-edge.

MPs voted narrowly against a motion designed to put Parliament back in control of Parliamentary business so that MPs could later vote to block a “no deal” Brexit and to prevent the next Prime Minister from simply closing parliament down.

The motion was defeated by just eleven votes, with all thirteen Scottish Tories voting against.

SNP MPs – along with MPs from other opposition parties in Westminster – have voted on three separate occasions in January, March and April this year to reject a no-deal Brexit outcome, which would be catastrophic for the economy, jobs and people’s living standards.

Commenting following the vote, the SNP’s Europe spokesperson, Peter Grant MP, said:

“MPs had an opportunity to take steps to remove the threat of a disastrous no-deal Brexit. However rather than standing up for their constituents and respecting Scotland’s overwhelming vote to remain in the EU, the thirteen Scottish Tory MPs shamefully voted to keep the catastrophic option on the table and to drive Scotland closer towards the cliff-edge.

“Ruth Davidson came to London today to back a hard-line Brexiteer as Prime Minister – instead, she should have come to instruct her Scottish MP colleagues to protect Scotland by voting to rule out no-deal.
“The people of Scotland deserve the choice of a better future than the chaos offered by Westminster and the sell-out of the Scottish Tories.

"There is no such thing as a good Brexit and any form of Brexit will be devastating for Scotland – destroying up to 100,000 jobs, costing every person up to £2,300 a year, and inflicting lasting harm on public services and the economy. That is a price that Scotland must not, and will not, pay.

"It’s also disappointing that Labour once again failed to get all its MPs to back its own motion. Labour MPs who abstained or even voted with the Tories were voting to keep open the threat to people’s livelihoods.

"It's clear beyond doubt that Westminster is not working and the only way to properly protect our interests is by becoming an independent European nation."

Re-elect Brendan O'Hara to represent Argyll & Bute

Re-elect Brendan O'Hara for Argyll & Bute on December 12th

In this General Election, we have the perfect opportunity to start shaping a new future for Scotland as an independent nation, within the European Union.

Like every other part of Scotland, Argyll & Bute voted overwhelmingly to remain in the European Union and that is a message I have delivered time and again to the Tories in Westminster. Yet despite the economic disaster that leaving the EU will mean for Argyll & Bute, Boris Johnson’s Tories are still determined to drag us out of Europe against our will.

An SNP victory here will tell Mr. Johnson that we reject his Tory hard-Brexit plan and that we are taking control of our own future.

Only with your financial help, however, can we ensure that every person behind every door in every town, in every village and on every island across this vast constituency gets to hear that positive SNP message of a new future for Scotland.

So please, give what you can. Any donation however small or large will make a real difference and help us secure a decisive win in Argyll & Bute and return Brendan to Westminster, to continue fighting for the people of Argyll & Bute and start building that new Scotland.

Thank you
