CALL FOR FOOTBALL CLUBS TO ADOPT AUTISM FRIENDLY APPROACH

PREMIERSHIP RIVALS TOP OF THE LEAGUE AT SUPPORTING AUTISTIC FANS

SNP MSP Fulton MacGregor is leading calls for football clubs to follow the lead of Aberdeen and Rangers and to adopt autism friendly approaches on match days.

Both Premiership clubs have been given Autism Friendly Awards for their approach to improving the experience of supporters with autism on match days, including through offering autism friendly hospitality boxes, staff training and offering advice on the best places to sit on a match day, as well as offering sensory suites, a viewing gallery, and plans to create quiet zones.

Now, Fulton MacGregor, who convenes Holyrood’s Cross Party Group on the Future of Football in Scotland, wants to see more clubs across the country taking similar steps to make their stadiums autism friendly.

Commenting, Mr MacGregor said:

“Our CPG on the Future of Football in Scotland has been doing a lot of work around improving disabled access to football stadiums across Scotland – and clubs making their stadiums more autism-friendly forms a key part of this.

“Football clubs in Scotland should be doing all they can to encourage as many fans as possible along to matches – and making improvements to the way that people with autism are able to experience match days will help do exactly that.

“It’s been excellent to see Aberdeen and Rangers, two of Scotland’s most prominent football clubs, leading the way on this and getting recognition from the National Autistic Society Scotland for their efforts. And other clubs across Scotland, including Celtic and my local Albion Rovers, have lots of measures in place to help supporters with a range of disabilities – proving that the small changes which make a big difference to supporters can and are being done.

“It’s now up to football clubs across the country to show the same ambition on autism as Aberdeen and Rangers have done and to make their stadiums autism friendly – so that all supporters are made to feel at home.”
