TORIES MAKE ENGLAND HIGHEST TAXED PART OF THE UK

COUNCIL TAX HIKE SEES ENGLISH TAXPAYERS FOOTING HIGHER BILL FOR POORER SERVICES

The Scottish Tories have been left red-faced by their own party announcing an average council tax hike of 5.1% in England – confirming Tory-run England as the highest taxed part of the UK.

The UK government today confirmed that the average Band D property in England pay £1,671 a year – a 5.1% increase on last year compared to a 3% rise in Scotland, and far outstripping the average Scottish Band D rate of £1,208 for 2018/19.

This year’s Scottish Budget has seen income tax bills fall for the majority of Scots – with 70% of taxpayers paying no more than they did last year, and 55% paying less than they would if they lived in Tory-run England. Councils across Scotland have chosen to increase council tax by a modest 3%, helping to deliver vital local services and provide funding for Scotland’s schools.

Ruth Davidson’s Tory party railed against these progressive changes which are funding our public services – despite her party allowing large hikes in council tax south of the border to help fund tax breaks for the wealthiest.

Commenting, SNP MSP Ash Denham, who sits on Holyrood’s Finance Committee, said:

“This Tory tax hike is embarrassing for Ruth Davidson, and confirms that England is the highest taxed part of the UK.

“After months of moaning and griping about modest and progressive tax changes in Scotland, which see the majority of taxpayers pay less income tax – the Scottish Tories have been embarrassed by their own party hiking council tax by an eye-watering 5.1% south of the border.

“That means that the average Band D council tax bill is £463 higher in England than in Scotland.

“Not only that, but Scottish taxpayers also benefit from a significant social contract that sees everyone receive free university tuition, free prescriptions, free personal care for the elderly and the best performing NHS – giving Scots the best deal in the UK.

“The fact is Ruth Davidson wants to hand a £550 million tax cut to the wealthy on top of Westminster cuts to the Scottish budget – all the while demanding the Scottish Government spends more and more money.

“It doesn’t add up – and the Scottish Tories are looking increasingly ridiculous as they get caught out again and again.”
