The SNP has welcomed the fact that the UK will not be crashing out of the European Union this week and renewed calls for the issue of EU membership to be put back to the people.

SNP Europe spokesperson Stephen Gethins MP said Theresa May must use this extension to hold a fresh EU referendum with the option of Remain on the ballot paper, and called on the Tories and Labour to stop ignoring Scotland, which voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU, in the Brexit process.

Stephen Gethins MP also warned Jeremy Corbyn that if Labour enable a Tory Brexit that brings an end to freedom of movement, they will pay the price at the ballot box in Scotland.

Commenting after the Brussels Brexit summit, Stephen Gethins MP said:

“This is a watershed moment in the Brexit process. With the European Union agreeing to a further extension to Article 50, Theresa May must use this time to hold a fresh EU referendum with the option to Remain on the ballot paper.

“It is welcome that we will not be crashing out on Friday but Scotland did not vote for Brexit and should not be forced to accept a Brexit deal put together by Labour and the Tories – parties that have ignored Scotland’s voice and interests every step of the way.

“Jeremy Corbyn must be clear on exactly what he is willing to concede to in talks with the Tories – if Labour helps them push through their plans to leave the Single Market, ending freedom of movement -  which will cost jobs and hit public services -  they will not be forgiven at the ballot box in Scotland.

“The UK government’s Brexit fiasco shows clearly that Scotland’s interests are best protected through independence.”
