The SNP has said Theresa May must accept an EU offer of a long extension to Article 50, and put the decision back to the people in a second referendum.

Speaking at Prime Ministers Questions, Ian Blackford MP challenged the Prime Minister on whether the Tory government had offered a second EU referendum at any point during its week of Brexit talks with the Labour Party - but got no clear answer.

Mr Blackford has now called on Jeremy Cobryn to come clean with the public about what exactly he is bargaining behind closed doors.

The SNP Westminster Leader warned that Scotland would not be forced to accept a backroom deal cooked up between the two Brexit parties - and said the Prime Minister must now accept a long extension and use it to hold a fresh referendum with Remain on the ballot paper.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

"Theresa May must finally do the right thing by the country - and accept the EU's offer of a long extension to Article 50. It’s time to end the Prime Minister’s Brexit delusion, and give people the choice to decide their future - in a second EU referendum, with Remain on the ballot paper.

“If it is the case that the UK government has not discussed a second EU Referendum in their talks with the Labour Party – then it begs the question, what is Jeremy Corbyn up to? The Leader of the Opposition has been flaky at least on the question of a second EU Referendum – he needs to come clean with the public on what exactly he is bargaining with the Tories, behind closed doors. People deserve to know the truth.

"As is now beyond doubt, there is no such thing as a good Brexit - and Scotland will not be forced to accept a damaging Tory-Labour backroom deal, which would harm jobs, living standards, public services and the economy.

"Scotland has been ignored throughout the Brexit process. Any pretence that we are treated as an equal partner in the UK has gone out the window. Whatever happens now it is clear the only way to properly protect our interests is with independence.”
