The SNP has said Theresa May must whip Tory MPs to vote against a No-Deal Brexit - or risk becoming the first Prime Minister in history to deliberately cause a recession.

Speaking at today's Prime Ministers Questions, Ian Blackford MP said the Prime Minister was once again focused on her divided Tory party rather than the interests of Scotland and the UK. The SNP Wesmtinster Leader said SNP MPs would vote against a No-Deal Brexit, in any and all circumstances, and said the Tory leader had a duty to make sure her MPs did the same.

Analysis has shown that any form of Brexit will be damaging for Scotland's economy. A report by the Scottish Government’s top economic adviser, published in February, revealed a No-Deal Brexit could cost 100,000 jobs in Scotland, and result in a recession worse than 2008 – causing Scotland’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to fall by up to 7%

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

"Theresa May risks becoming the first Prime Minister in history to deliberately cause a recession - if she refuses to whip Tory MPs to vote against a devastating No-Deal Brexit.

"Giving her MPs a free vote is a disgraceful dereliction of duty, which could drag Scotland and the UK off the Brexit cliff edge - causing catastrophic harm to jobs, living standards, public services and the economy.

"We know that any form of Brexit will be damaging for Scotland's economy. A No-Deal Brexit could cost 100,000 Scottish jobs and cause a recession worse than the 2008 financial crisis - leaving the whole country poorer and worse off.

"The Prime Minister must finally act in the interests of the whole of the UK - and not just her own party - by whipping her MPs to vote against a No-Deal Brexit, and extend Article 50 long enough to hold a second EU referendum - with Remain on the ballot paper.

"Scotland's wishes have been completely ignored throughout the Brexit process. We voted to remain in the EU and we must not be dragged out against our will.

"Westminster is failing Scotland, and whatever happens now it is clearer than ever that the only way to properly protect Scotland's interests is with independence."
