SNP WARN TORY GOVERNMENT AGAINST “ROLLING BACK” ON DEVOLUTION WITH LATEST POWER GRAB PLANS

COSLA – UK GOVERNMENT “NOT PLAYING BY THE RULES”

The SNP’s Treasury spokesperson has accused the Tory government of “rolling back on devolution” and threatening its very foundations with its latest attempt at a “cynical power grab” from the Scottish Parliament.

Alison Thewliss MP warned that control over spending decisions on Scotland's £158million share of the ‘Stronger Towns’ fund must remain at Holyrood, rather than being “stolen and hoarded by a detached Tory government in Westminster”.

The comments follow reports that the Treasury was actively seeking to bypass the Scottish Parliament over spending controls which would short-change the Scottish budget by more than £150m.

The President of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA), Alison Evison, also criticised the Tories’ plans to distribute the money through a bid fund stating that there are “clearly established responsibilities under devolution which must be upheld,” and that the UK government was “not playing by the rules.”

Commenting, Alison Thewliss MP said:

“Yet again, the UK Tory government is playing fast and loose with devolution with yet another blatant power grab on the Scottish Parliament.

“It would be an outrage if the UK Tory government railroaded through its plans to roll back devolution, bypassing the Scottish Parliament and short-changing the Scottish budget by more than £150million.

“Control over the Scottish Parliament's spending decisions must be made in Holyrood, not stolen and hoarded by a detached Tory government in Westminster that is acting against the interests of Scotland, and threatening massive damage to our economy as a result of Brexit.

"Time and time again, Scotland's wishes have been ignored, and it is becoming clearer by the day that the only way to properly protect Scotland's interests is with independence."
