LAW SOCIETY: “MAJOR CONCERNS” OVER BREXIT HEALTH IMPACT

Brexit raises a series of “major” concerns on health, the Law Society of Scotland has said – with UK citizens facing delays to accessing new medicines.

In a damning report, the legal body has said that medical licensing, cross-border healthcare, and research could all be impacted by Brexit.

Changes to medical licensing are a “major concern” that could “result in delays to accessing new treatments in medications”, according to the report – while research networks are “already fracturing”.

The analysis also highlights the impact leaving the EU could have on staffing, stating that the end of freedom of movement “may deter those who are considering moving to the UK”.

Commenting, SNP MSP and non-practising nurse Emma Harper said:

“This is a damning report that highlights the huge problems the NHS faces due to Brexit.

“The fact that it raises the prospect of delays for UK citizens accessing new medicines, as well as repeating earlier warnings on health staff shortages, simply underlines the seriousness of the situation.

“What’s particularly worrying is that months after triggering Article 50 we look no closer to solving these issues – and the clock is ticking.

“It’s essential that Theresa May is dragged back from the hard Brexit cliff-edge – and that we keep our vital membership of the single market.”
