The SNP has said Scotland and other devolved administrations must be included in Brexit negotiations ahead of the European Union Withdrawal Bill in parliament.

SNP Europe spokesperson Peter Grant MP has questioned why the UK government has ignored formal requests by the Scottish and Welsh governments to hold a Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) meeting.

Seven months have passed since the last JMC meeting, despite the ongoing Brexit negotiations and the introduction of the EU Withdrawal Bill in parliament.

The SNP were refused an emergency House of Commons debate this week on the role of the devolved administrations in the negotiations.

Commenting, Peter Grant MP said:

"It is deeply disappointing that the Westminster parliament has once again stuck its head in the sand and refused to listen to the concerns of the devolved nations on the Brexit negotiations.

"It has now been seven months since the Joint Ministerial Committee last met, and it is completely unacceptable that the UK government is ignoring formal requests by the Scottish and Welsh governments to reconvene.

"The outcome of the Brexit negotiations will have a huge impact on Scotland's economy, industries, and communities for years to come - with the potential to cost Scotland 80,000 jobs and £11.2billion a year.

“With our membership of the Single Market under threat, thousands of jobs on the line and tens of thousands of EU nationals worried about their future rights, it is vital that the devolved administrations are properly represented at the centre of these negotiations.

"The minority Tory government must reach out and seek consensus - refusing to engage or consult undermines our democracy and the constitutional rights of the devolved administrations."
