SNP MSP PRAISES SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT DECISION TO FLY RAINBOW FLAG FOR EDINBURGH PRIDE

Equalities campaigners have secured a victory after pressuring the Scottish Parliament to fly the rainbow flag outside the building on Saturday, as Edinburgh hosts its annual Pride march.

Organisations including YWCA Scotland called for the Scottish Parliament to show solidarity with the LGBTI+ community by flying the Rainbow flag from the building, and they were backed by MSPs including Christina McKelvie. The Presiding Officer responded to Ms McKelvie confirming that the Rainbow flag would be flying at the Scottish Parliament on Saturday.

Commenting, SNP MSP Christina McKelvie said:

“I am absolutely delighted that the Scottish Parliament has listened to the calls from equalities organisations and that they will fly the rainbow flag on Saturday.

“This is a great show of solidarity with the LGBTI community in Edinburgh, Scotland and beyond, and I know that people will be delighted to learn that the Scottish Parliament stands with them in the face of continued attacks to LGBTI rights across the world.

“I am also pleased to hear that Parliament staff will be joining the march under the Parliament banner for the first time ever – a reminder that our national Parliament stands shoulder to shoulder with those demanding equality of all kinds.

“I wish Pride marchers all the best in Edinburgh on Saturday.”

Kara Brown, Director of YWCA Scotland, added:

“The Young Women's Movement are so happy to hear that the Scottish Parliament will be flying a rainbow flag this Saturday to mark Edinburgh Pride. We feel it's so important as this symbol represents solidarity with LGBTQI+ identities here in Scotland and around the world.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said previously:

“With LGBTI rights under attack across the globe, this year’s Edinburgh Pride comes at a particularly poignant moment, and it’s more important than ever that we stand together and support equality.

“Scottish Government buildings will be proudly flying the Rainbow flag this Saturday, and I hope that others do likewise.”
