SECRET tapes show May's real view of leaving Europe

Written by

Theresa May’s deep-seated concerns about the severe economic damage that Brexit would do to the UK have been revealed – while the born-again Brexiteers in the Scottish Tories continue to hide from the impact turning our back on Europe would have on Scotland.

Recordings show that, speaking before the EU referendum, the Prime Minister warned of businesses leaving the UK if membership of the single market was lost and security concerns from leaving the European Union, in stark contrast to her wrong-headed and baseless assertions since the vote that Brexit will be full of opportunity for the UK.

The revelation comes as a Tory amendment to a Holyrood debate seeks to remove all mention of the impact of Brexit on Scotland, despite a majority of Tory MSPs opposing leaving the EU during the referendum.

Commenting, SNP MSP and convener of Holyrood’s Europe Committee, Joan McAlpine, said:

“Theresa May’s real views on Brexit have now been exposed – the secret recordings which have now come to light show that the warnings the then-Home Secretary made before the referendum are actually very accurate, talking of the damage that leaving Europe would inflict on our economy and the problems it would cause for our security.

“Expert research shows that quitting Europe threatens up to 80,000 jobs in Scotland and could cost the Scottish economy more than £11 billion a year by 2030.

“We now know that Theresa May privately agrees with forecasts like this. But the revelations show the utter contempt that the Tories have for the public – assuming that people will forget all the warnings they made prior to the referendum about the damage of Brexit. Unfortunately for them, the Scottish public have slightly longer memories than the Scottish Tories.

“Their amendment to today’s Scottish Government motion, in trying to airbrush any mention of Brexit from debate at Holyrood, shows the complete denial they are in over the impact leaving Europe would have on Scotland’s economy – and simply shows that they are following Theresa May’s lead to forget what they thought just a few months ago.

“The fact that she has since changed her tone so dramatically and seems intent on the hardest Brexit possible shows just how in thrall the UK government is to the hard-right of the Tory party instead of pursuing the national interest.

“We have seen the Scottish Tories transform into a rabble of born-again Brexiteers and the doublethink at the heart of their arguments becomes clearer by the day. They are in complete and utter disarray – and the Scottish public will not stand for their denial of the damage that their Brexit will inflict on Scotland.”
