EXPERT hails Scottish Scottish Government'Major Victory' on Fiscal Framework

Written by

Nicola Sturgeon and John Swinney's delivery of a fair deal for Scotland in the fiscal framework negotiations against the Tory Treasury has been described as a "major victory for the Scottish Government" by a prominent economist.

Speaking on STV’s Scotland Tonight, Professor David Bell noted that the deal secured by the First Minister and Deputy First Minister "is the one that is most favourable to the Scottish Government."

Professor Bell went on to describe the outcome as "a major victory for the Scottish Government".

Commenting, SNP MSP Linda Fabiani - who represented the SNP on the Smith Commission - said:

"The deal secured by Nicola Sturgeon and John Swinney isn't just a major victory for the Scottish Government, but is a major victory for Scotland - and it's right that we pay tribute to the First Minister and Deputy First Minister for their resolute protection of Scotland's interests throughout the negotiations.

"From a positon where the Tories were trying to cut Scotland's budget by £7 billion, John Swinney has negotiated a position which won't allow one single penny to be taken from Scotland by the Treasury - ensuring no detriment today and confirming that no detriment can be imposed on Scotland by the UK Government at any point in the future.

"This deal will also ensure that powers Scotland was promised through the Smith Commission are delivered - and the SNP will set out progressive plans on how to best use these powers to keep Scotland moving forward."
