EU REF: UK GOVT HAS CAUSED ‘SIX MONTHS OF DAMAGING UNCERTAINTY’

SCOTLAND ONLY PART OF UK WITH A PLAN TO PROTECT OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH EUROPE

The Scottish National Party has said that the UK government has recklessly caused “six months of damaging uncertainty” to the UK economy and society, by failing to come up with a plan to protect our relationship with Europe, since the EU referendum on 23 June 2016.

On the six month anniversary of the referendum, SNP Europe spokesperson Stephen Gethins MP said that the UK government had continued the “gross irresponsibility and negligence” of the Leave campaign by refusing to give any details about what leaving the EU will mean beyond “meaningless slogans”.

The MP for North East Fife said that the threat of a right-wing hard Brexit was already "hitting the economy, businesses, families, and communities across the country", and called on the UK government to respond to the Scottish Government’s plan for protecting Scotland’s relationship with Europe, and set out a clear plan of its own at the earliest opportunity in the New Year.

Commenting Stephen Gethins MP, the SNP spokesperson on Europe, said:

“The UK government has recklessly caused six months of damaging uncertainty to the UK economy and society, by failing to come up with anything that resembles a clear plan to protect our relationship with Europe following the EU referendum.

“The threat of a right-wing hard Brexit is already hitting the economy, businesses, families and communities across the country – and all this before the UK has even left the EU.

“The gross irresponsibility and negligence of the Leave campaign, who fought the referendum on a blank piece of paper, is being continued by the UK government who still refuse to give any details about what leaving the EU means – aside from repeating meaningless slogans.

“All of this stands in stark contrast to the Scottish Government, which set out its priorities in the days following the referendum, and published a clear plan to remain in the world’s largest single market and protect our relationship with Europe.

“The UK government must now respond to the Scottish Government’s plan, and finally set out a plan of its own – one which genuinely treats Scotland as an equal partner, and respects the mandate of the Scottish people who voted by an overwhelming majority to remain in the EU.”
