“Bizarre boomerang attack" on brexit referendum cash

Written by

Opposition parties must publish their spending in the EU referendum campaign after a bizarre boomerang attack on the SNP.

The Conservatives, Labour and Lib Dems have all criticised the level of SNP spending during the campaign, despite an overwhelming Remain vote in Scotland – but have failed to disclose their own campaign contributions.

Commenting, SNP MSP Bill Kidd said:

"This is a bizarre, boomerang attack which threatens to be a huge embarrassment for the Lib Dems, Labour and the Tories.

“The SNP ran a strong, positive and effective campaign, helping to successfully secure the overwhelming 62% vote for Remain in Scotland.

"And given the attack they have mounted against the SNP, they must now publish figures showing exactly much they spent on the campaign in Scotland – and the verified accounts providing evidence of it.

"Given the over-the-top language used by the opposition, I expect that they'll each have spent many times what the SNP did – otherwise we'll know that this was political opportunism and hypocrisy of the worst kind.

"The born-again Brexiteers in the ranks of the Tories might want to distract from the complete mess Theresa May is making of Brexit, but Labour and the Lib Dems should be getting behind the SNP's efforts to protect our place in Europe."
